THE CONTENT, IN FULL

The complete software engineer CV example

This example is for a web-focused engineer with a junior role followed by a software engineering role. It puts recent work before education and includes one project with clear technical decisions. A graduate, career changer or senior engineer should change that emphasis rather than copy the career history.

MAKE THE CONTENT YOURS

What to include in your software engineer CV

Write a profile that establishes your focus

Name the kind of software you work on and two or three strengths that the rest of your CV demonstrates. Jamie’s profile connects backend development with testing and production debugging; the experience section provides examples of each. For a mobile or embedded role, describe your actual domain instead. Avoid opening with a long list of personal qualities or a seniority claim that your work history does not support.

Explain engineering decisions, not just your stack

For each recent role, describe the problem, your contribution and a result or way of checking the work. An endpoint optimisation is stronger when you explain what changed and how you measured it. The sample’s response times are fictional load-test results, not business-wide performance claims. If you have no reliable metrics, describe a verifiable outcome such as a regression test that reproduces a bug or release instructions another engineer used. Keep “built”, “contributed” and “led” accurate to your responsibility.

Group skills so a reader can use them

Separate languages, application tools and engineering practices. Choose skills that are relevant to the vacancy and that you could explain in an interview. A technology belongs in your CV when you can connect it to work, study or a project; copying every keyword from a job description creates claims you may not be able to support. Avoid star ratings and percentage bars, which do not explain what you can do.

Give a project enough context to discuss

A useful project entry explains its purpose, your role, the important implementation choices and how someone could inspect it. Add your own public repository or demo link when it is appropriate, and make the README understandable. For team projects, identify your contribution. For confidential work, describe the problem at a safe level without exposing code, credentials, client data or internal system details. One relevant, explained project is more useful than a list of repository names.

Adapt the structure to your experience

For a first engineering role, move relevant education, an apprenticeship, projects or placements above unrelated employment. You do not need to pretend a personal project was paid work. For a more experienced role, give recent technical decisions, reliability work, collaboration or mentoring the space they deserve. Keep older roles shorter. The correct length depends on relevant evidence and the employer’s requirements, rather than forcing every CV onto one page.

Choose a readable format and check the actual file

This example uses the free Ledger layout with conventional headings and a single reading order. That is a practical starting point for applications that extract text, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every applicant tracking system. Follow the employer’s requested file type. Review every PDF page, check that text can be selected and copied in a sensible order, and test your email and portfolio links. Keep images of code and decorative skill charts out of the document.

A BULLET WITH A REASON TO BE THERE

Turn a vague responsibility into evidence

Too vague

Worked on APIs and improved performance.

More specific · fictional illustration

Investigated a slow order-history endpoint and added an index and pagination; median response time fell from 480 ms to 210 ms in a repeatable load test.

The revised example identifies the feature, the engineer’s action and the measurement context. Both numbers are illustrative. Use this structure only with your own evidence; if you did not measure a change, explain what you checked instead of inventing a percentage.

Common software engineer CV mistakes

Treating the skills section as a keyword dump
Prioritise tools relevant to this role and connect the most important ones to evidence. Do not claim experience with a framework simply because it appears in the advert.
Describing team results as individual ownership
Say which part you implemented, investigated or reviewed. Use “led” only when you were responsible for leading the work.
Leaving project links unexplained
A link alone does not explain your contribution. Add a short purpose, relevant technical choices and working setup instructions; check that the destination is actually accessible.
Copying sample achievements into a real application
Replace the fictional employers, dates, qualification, project and results. Keep only statements that reflect your own work and that you are authorised to share.

Before you send your CV

  • Replace every fictional contact detail, employer, qualification and date.
  • Match the profile and skill groups to the work you are actually applying for.
  • Check that each technical claim has evidence you can discuss.
  • Separate personal projects from paid roles and make your contribution clear.
  • Remove confidential details and check any repository or demo links.
  • Read the complete PDF and follow the employer’s submission instructions.

Software engineer CV: useful answers

Can I use this software engineer CV example for free?

Yes. Open it in CV Maker, replace the fictional content and download a PDF without an account. An account is needed to save a CV to your collection, and your plan’s saved-CV allowance applies. The example uses a free layout.

Can a graduate use this example?

Use the structure selectively. Put relevant projects, study, placements or apprenticeship work near the top, and remove the fictional employment history. Explain what you built and tested without claiming professional experience you do not have.

Should I include GitHub or a portfolio?

Include your own link if it helps demonstrate relevant work and you are comfortable sharing it. Check that the repository or demo opens, contains no secrets and explains your contribution. A public GitHub profile is not a substitute for describing your experience, and not every role requires one.

Is this guaranteed to pass an ATS?

No template can guarantee that. This example starts with a single-column layout and standard headings. Follow the application instructions, inspect the downloaded file and verify that its text is readable and copies in the right order.

Will using the example replace my existing CV?

If your editor already has content, Handyfolio asks before replacing the draft. You can keep editing instead. Loading the example does not overwrite a saved account CV or save the fictional content automatically. Signed-in accounts must have room for a new saved CV.
