META TAG CHECKER / A PRACTICAL GUIDE
Check a page’s meta tags before sharing it
Read the findings, distinguish essential metadata from optional social tags and retest changes.
Check the exact page
Enter the public URL of the page you want people to find, rather than always checking the homepage. If the site blocks fetching or is not public, paste the page HTML. The checker reads the returned HTML and does not run scripts.
Review the page introduction
The title should describe that page. The description should give a useful reason to visit. Check the canonical URL and robots directive against your publishing intent. Review Open Graph fields when the link will be shared on social platforms.
Fix and check again
Update the fields in your site or CMS, publish the change and fetch the page again. A missing optional social tag is different from an unintended noindex directive. Passing these checks does not establish ranking or indexing status.
An example to work from
Title: Handmade Ceramic Mugs | Example Studio Description: Explore small-batch ceramic mugs made in Bristol. See colours, sizes and care instructions. Canonical: https://example.com/mugs
Before you finish
Verify that each tag describes this page and that your preferred URL is public and correct.
